Onyx has been given a new home.

5.2.18 - UPDATED ASSESSMENT (done by Onyx's Temporary Carer - Cate Strathdee)

REG’D NAME: G26208 Bashan Onyx
PADDOCK NAME: Onyx
PURITY/CROSS: Purebred Arabian
BRAND: 6C diamond n.sh. 3 over 9 o.sh. (clearly visible)
GENDER: Gelding
COLOUR: Black
HEIGHT: 15hh
DOB / AGE: 21.9.2009…rising 9 years old.

TRANSPORTING EXPERIENCE: No update necessary.
(Previous comment: "Walked straight on. He fidgeted but I tied him up and he just stood there.")
HOOF TRIM: Hooves are all trimmed and now wearing evenly since muscle work. I trim him myself and I don't even catch him anymore just walk up and trim.
(Previous comments: "Black hooves … excellent condition. Front hooves long in toe, uneven wear. He stood to get feet done … was a bit fidgety on the off hind. (11.10.2017).")
WORMING: Wormed and tick fly treatment on 10.1.18.
(Previous comment: "Wormed on 12.10.2017 with Macworma & Tape")
COAT AND GENERAL APPEARANCE: Coat is sun bleached but healthy. Some hair has grown back in the bald patches, however the vet advised it was caused by a 'chemical burn' and what's grown back is probably all that will. Advised to get a good saddle cloth to suit.
(Previous comment: "Shiny with patches missing along back line (10/10 – some growth appearing due to treatment").
CUTS, SCARS, BLEMISHES: Vet advised the crooked mount placement is not structural - it's from nerve damage potentially done from a previous injury.
(Previous comment: "Offside back leg, Mouth placement is crooked.")
LEGS: Improving with trimming.
(Previous comment: "Mostly straight … I would say he’s a little bit turned out in the front legs … nothing big.")
TEMPERAMENT & CHARACTER: He's settled into a herd environment there is no dominance. Everyone lives peacefully.
(Previous comment: "Pretty laid back fellow. A real snorter when something he doesn’t like appears. If a float drives onto the property he goes to the other side of the paddock."
CATCH:
Good to catch if on near side. Won’t let you catch him from the offside.
LEAD - WALK & TROT: He trots beside me.
(Previous comment: "Leads fine in the walk … haven’t tried at the trot.)
TIES-UP: Yes
BRUSHES: Yes
RUG: Yes
WASH / HOSE: Good. Tried to steal the hose.
LUNGE: He was a bit stiff on the offside but once he realised what I wanted, he went around.
(Previous comment: "Untried")
MOVEMENT: He has three solid strides .. the muscle work seemed to help the dragging.
(Previous comment: "Walk … steady. Trot … back offside leg is left behind slightly and looks like a hip may need adjusting from walking like that for a while. Only seen him canter when a float comes around and that looks very springy.")
SOUNDNESS / LAMENESS: Still never been lame.
(Previous comment: "Hasn’t shown any lameness or anything … can still high-tail-it around the paddock when he wants to.")
GENERAL NOTES & RECOMMENDATIONS: When put in yard by self he just whinnied couple times then got over it and stood patiently. When had vet out he accepted everything. Is a lot more accepting of everyone. Comes up for scratches to anyone.
(Previous comment: "Seems to like ladies better, but he comes up to anyone who’s been to my place, for a scratch. He’s stressed when alone so I’ve always kept a young horse in with him. He is a bit of a dominant type.")

HISTORY:- Apparently as a young horse he put a hoof in a feed bin which caused a spur (unknown which leg) since then he has had a saddle on and ridden but constant work was not continued due to his ex-owner being elderly and having health issues.
